BIOL 438-01W, BIOLOGY SEMINAR
ORAL REPORT
1. About 1 or 1 1/2 weeks before your
presentation, submit to me (McLaughlin) a one-page article pertinent to your
topic that I can reproduce for the class.
A bonus question will be asked about this reading.
2. Mrs. Wood will help you with the Power Point
program for your slides.
3. You may advertize your talk one week before
the presentation. Mrs. Wood will help
you develop a creative ad.
4. On the day of your talk, have 15 copies of
your outline with at least two pertinent references to hand out to the
class. This should be no more than one
or two pages.
5. Although the body of your talk is the main
thing, do not forget the importance of
your Introduction and Conclusion/Summary.
Formulate objectives for your presentation.
6. For each seminar presentation, two students
will be assigned the responsibility of asking a pertinent and intelligent
question about the presentation.
7. Fill out a biographical information sheet.
8. Speech Evaluation Form.

You will be assigned
an advisor who will proofread your paper and offer suggestions on style, clarity of outline, use of references,
grammar and "awks". The will
NOT write the paper for you.
It is important that
your rough draft be equivalent to the completed paper.
3. WRITING THE PAPER
- Include an
Introduction and a Conclusion/Summary.
- The body of the
paper should have a logical outline.
- About 10 pages
long.
- A bibliography
should include Literature Cited and perhaps References using the style
indicated in the Documenting The Paper handout. Limit use of Internet/Webpage citations.
- Follow the
deadlines given in the Course Syllabus
- You might try a
visit to the University Writing Center.
4. REVIEWERS
The most frequent
comments from our outside reviewers were "poorly written" and
"inappropriate use of literature and references." They will be submitting to me a list of helpful
hints and guidelines, which I will pass on to you along with their suggested
point values for different sections of the paper. Our reviewers are respected biologists in whom we have the utmost
confidence. They have read student
senior papers from previous seminars so they are experienced in this task. Our reviewers are tough, but fair and have
given very useful feedback
to students.
