Dr. Mike Howell has been a professor at Samford University for 35 years.  He has authored over 50 scientific papers.  His contributions to science include discovery of the first environmental androgens as pollutants, development of silver staining methods for study of human chromosomes, and development of a viewing tank for studying and photographing fish without harming them.  This teaching-photographic tank has allowed the faculty at Samford to capture images of vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants during class field trips.  Specimens are collected, photographed, and then returned unharmed to the wild.  The images are then made available for students to identify and study from the departmental web site.  Dr. and Mrs. Howell have two children and three grandchildren.
