English 309 (formerly English 400) is a Special Topics course
offered in the first term (December 29-January 11) of Jan Term
in London 2002, focusing on British English. We will explore the
King's and Queen's English in the theatre, in novels and poems,
in the speeches and documents of its history, in newspapers and
magazines, on the BBC, and particularly in the place where it
matters most--the language of everyday life, in street markets,
in shops and restaurants, in Speaker's Corner, in popular music,
in the slang of the sub-cultures of the English language. We will
study the historical foundations of British English; we will devote
some time to the study of regional dialects; and we will contrast
British English with American English. The course is open to everyone.
English majors or minors may fulfill the elective requirement
with this course.
