The Recommendation Speech

The recommendation speech is the oral complement of the proposal paper. As such, the research and analysis you do in preparation for the speaking assignment should parallel these processes for the writing. As with previous assignments, however, you should adapt appropriately to the mode (speaking) and needs of the audience.

Purpose

To advance a proposition of policy, advocating a particular course of action (the solution from your proposal). As with the document, the primary purpose is persuasive.

Evaluation Criteria

The speaker

    1. Shows evidence of thorough and reasonable audience analysis.
    2. Identifies a problem, offers a specific solution, and attempts to persuade listeners to accept the solution.
    3. Employs well-chosen arguments which are free from logical fallacies.
    4. Supports points of analysis with accurate, relevant, objective and sufficient evidence.
    5. Organizes the speech according to a strategy appropriate for proposing a solution (see Chapter 17 of the speech text for suggestions).
    6. Includes an effective introduction and conclusion, with proficient use of transitions in the body of the speech.
    7. Cites and documents a sufficient number of outside sources of information.
    8. Adapts language use to listeners and to the constraints of the oral context, while conforming to the conventions of standard spoken English.
    9. Delivers the speech in an extemporaneous, fluent, and articulate manner, exemplifying the controlled use of face, body, gesture, and voice.
    10. Effectively uses visual aids, including PowerPoint software.
    11. Conforms to the time limit of 5-6 minutes.
