| We are proud of Oak Hill Cemetery and look forward to serving your interests and needs regarding this historic burial ground. The cemetery is located on the north side of downtown Birmingham behind the Birmingham–Jefferson County Civic Center. There is only one entrance to the cemetery, off 19th Street North, and the Administrative Office for the cemetery is located in the Pioneer’s Memorial Building, located directly in front of you as you enter the grounds. You may park along the side of any roadway, or unpaved carriageway, as long as you do not block the flow of traffic. When parking, please be sensitive to the fact that family burial plots often come to the very edge of the roadways, and take care not to drive or park on top of them. | ![]() |
To find us from I-65, take the I-20/59 East exit. From I-65 S you will bear to the right and take the 17th Street/Downtown exit. If you miss this, take the 22nd Street/Downtown exit. From the 17th Street exit, stay in the left lane and turn left on 8th Avenue North. Go two blocks and turn left of 19th Street North. The cemetery is at the corner of 11th Avenue North and 19th Street North. The only entrance is from 19th Street. If you take the 22nd Street/Downtown exit, from either direction on I-20/59, you will encounter a one-way street heading south. The first light is 8th Avenue North, and you will turn right. Go two blocks to 19th Street North and turn right.
| Oak Hill Cemetery is open to the public from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. Outside of these hours, the gates will be locked. If you need to visit at other times, please call the Association's office during business hours. The Superintendent can be found on the grounds every weekday and can help you locate burials. He can often be found on the large riding lawn mower or in the cemetery "shop" in the back corner of the grounds near the intersection of 11th Avenue and 17th Street North (map, location #45). |
It is estimated that Oak Hill contains approximately 10,000 burials, and, in many cases, extensive records about those interred in the cemetery have been maintained. You can call the cemetery office at (205) 251-6532 to arrange to research these files, or to arrange a visit outside regular hours. If you receive no answer, please leave a voice mail message with your name, telephone number, and reason for calling. You can also write us with your information request (see contact information below). [Note: US GenWeb has an Oak Hill Cemetery interment list. Click the link, then scroll down. It is broken into several alphabetical text files.]
If you visit the cemetery to obtain information from the files, and no one is available to help you, please fill out a “Request-for-Information” form, located in a pocket on the office door. This enables us to track information requests, help put lot-owner descendants in touch with one another, and follow up on your request in a timely manner.
The Oak Hill Memorial Association publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Oak Hill Pioneer. The newsletter’s primary purpose is to shed light on the history of Birmingham through the context of the individual lives of those interred in the cemetery. We are, therefore, continually seeking more information about Oak Hill lot owners and their families. If you are in possession of photographs and/or family documents relevant to Oak Hill Cemetery, we would be interested in acquiring copies for our files for the benefit of present and future descendants interested in learning about their family’s history. We are also interested in publishing information about Oak Hill families in the newsletter. If you are not currently receiving the newsletter and would like to, please contact the Director.
